The Conservationists: Chapter 3


Alma felt giddy, proud and exhausted after fielding the audience’s questions. She grabbed a couple of finger-sandwiches from the buffet – vegetable spread and cucumber, she never touched meat – and, blood sugar replenished, somehow managed to disentangle herself from the admiring crowd.

 

    

 

     She looked around and spotted Thomas Pomeroy at the far end of the room, leaning over the stainless steel table that supported the owl’s remains. Their eyes met, and he smiled. In his hands he held two glasses of champagne.
