The Monster: Chapter 2
Jen cooked spaghetti with meat sauce for supper, one of Wilma’s perennial favorites. She could tell that Wilma struggled with the decision whether to eat or not. After Jen had finished eating, Wilma pushed away her untouched plate.
“The food is cold!” the girl howled, and ran to her room. Jen followed.
The girl threw herself on the bed and buried her face in the pillow. Jen sat down next to her, and placed her hand on the girls’ shoulder.
“What’s the matter, sweetie?” Jen asked. Wilma didn’t answer.
“Daddy will be back really soon,” Jen tried. “He will only be gone two nights.”
“I don’t care if Daddy comes back,” came the response, muffled by the pillow. “He is a dumb Daddy. It’s his fault that I have to be with a fake mommy. It’s all his fault.”
Jen gave up and went downstairs. After scraping Wilma’s food into the dog bowl and putting up the dishes, she poured a glass of wine and sat down in the living room. Surely things would be easier tomorrow?
